Sergeant James Ramsay was a UNIT soldier who was called to the UNIT facility of scientific researcher Dr. Sally Arnold. She had rediscovered a Nestene pod placed in storage many years earlier, and exposed it to deep-space transmissions, re-establishing contact with the Nestene Consciousness. The building was placed under quarantine and searched by UNIT operatives led by Lockwood, Dr. Daniel Matthews and Ramsay. Arnold helped the team find a hidden room containing more Nestene pods. However, unsealing the doors allowed the reactivation of a second pod and also of the Autons held in the warehouse. The second pod was able to escape through an air vent and evade capture for a further two years. (BBV: Auton)

Ramsay returned to his regular UNIT duties, but was reunited with Lockwood shortly before the discovery of the escaped creature on Sentinal Island. There, he bravely fought the Autons and helped Lockwood and Natasha Alexander to halt the Nestene plans for conquest. (BBV: Auton 2: Sentinel) Shortly afterwards, Ramsey met Arnold and Ross Palmer, searching for Lockwood. Together they found him being used as a conduit for the Nestene Consciousness. Ramsey gave his life to pass a weapon to Lockwood, allowing Lockwood to take his own life and prevent the invasion. (BBV: Auton 3: Awakening)
