Jessica Hynes appeared in the Doctor Who serials Human Nature, The Family of Blood and The End of Time as Joan Redfern and Verity Newman respectively. Prior to this, she voiced Glory Bee in the Doctor Who audio drama Invaders from Mars.

As a teenager, Hynes was a member of the National Youth Theatre company, and made her screen début in 1993 playing the First Midwife in Peter Greenaway's The Baby of Mâcon. Her film credits include Shaun of the Dead and voiceover work for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Hynes co-created Spaced and appeared in it alongside Simon Pegg, who had also been in Invaders from Mars. In 2011, she appeared in The Hour, with Burn Gorman playing her husband.
