W.G. Grace was a famous cricketer known to at least some Britons in the early 20th century. Sir Robert Muir compared the Fifth Doctor to him after a cricket game at Cranleigh Hall on 11 June 1925. Sir Robert referred to him as "the Master," which momentarily confused the Doctor as he believed that he was referring to his enemy with the same name. (DW: Black Orchid)
