Prior to his involvement in the DWU, Wise was a prolific writer of children's animation and live action shows from the 1970s to the 1990s in the United States. One of his first professional jobs was writing "How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth", an episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series. This makes him, along with Jane Espenson and John Shiban, one of only three people to write for performed Star Trek and Doctor Who.
