Filmed in Portmerion, Wales, but set in Italy, The Masque of Mandragora was the first story of Season 14; written by Louis Marks it featured Tom Baker as the Doctor and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith in a confrontation with a living energy known as the Mandragora Helix. The story marked the first appearance of a radically redesigned TARDIS console room and the first televised explanation of why the Doctor and his companions always seem to encounter English language speakers.
