Captain Benjamin Spooner Briggs (24 April 1835 – on or about 25 November 1872) was master of the Mary Celeste. He was accompanied by his wife Sarah and their young daughter Sophia on a voyage from New York City to Genoa, Italy, in November 1872.

On the 25th of November, Daleks materialised on the Mary Celeste’s deck in search of the Doctor's TARDIS. Their appearance frightened everyone aboard into immediately abandoning ship. Like his crew and family before him, Briggs leaped overboard from the gunwale in the hope of escape. Neither his remains nor those of anyone else from ship were ever recovered. Like the others, Briggs is assumed to have perished on or shortly after 25 November 1872. (TV: The Chase)

He was not the last Captain Briggs to lose his ship to the Doctor's arch nemeses. 1,654 years later (then roughly 65.5 million years earlier), another Captain Briggs lost her freighter to Cybermen. (TV: Earthshock)
