Before you create your template, please consider carefully whether we need it. Templates that vary only in minor ways from each other — in particular, infoboxen — can often be better handled by taking an existing infobox and adding variables that show up only when defined.

That said, we do encourage you to experiment with coding. Just make sure that you put your experiments in category:template sandbox. When you think you've developed something that's good enough to go into use on the wiki, consider starting a discussion in the Panopticon before putting it on a lot of pages.
