Rio de Janeiro, or Rio, was a city in South America on Earth.
During her travels with the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond wanted to see Rio de Janeiro in the year 2020. She dressed for the warm climate, but was disappointed to find herself almost six thousand miles off course when the TARDIS materialised in Cwmtaff, Wales, at the site of Nasreen Chaudhry's drilling operation. (TV: The Hungry Earth) In their attempts to get to Rio, they encountered dragons, went jousting and visited Tibet. (PROSE: The Glamour Chase)
The Fifth Doctor and Turlough visited Rio de Janeiro in 2080. They encountered Ileana de Santos, who was a werewolf and had been since Napoléon Bonaparte's troops marched on the town in 1812. (AUDIO: Loups-Garoux)
