Sammy was a young boy. On 23 November 1963, the Shroud preyed on people's grief, and Sammy's mother fell victim to it, seeing it as Sammy's late father. However, Sammy was too young to be affected by the Shroud, and his neighbour, Edith Thomas, offered to take care of him inside her house. With the Doctor insisting that Edith would be a good caretaker, Sammy went with her. Later, the Doctor realised that the innocence of children would be powerful enough to combat the grief of the Shroud, and has his companions round up all the kids they could find, Sammy included.
