The Space Defence Station was a British military base in Devesham, intended for alien invasion, with offices for UNIT staff such as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. It existed at least two years before Sarah Jane Smith was travelling with the Fourth Doctor, and was the only such base of its kind in the world. Space freighters were able to take off from the base.
The Kraals created a replica of the Defence Station to rehearse their invasion of Earth. Their androids almost took over the real base, but were defeated by the Doctor. (TV: The Android Invasion)
Sometime in the early to mid 21st century, the former Defence Station was bought by space tourism billionaire Campbell Irons, who made it the base of operations for the British Rocket Group. (AUDIO: The Feast of Axos)
