Martha found a passageway to the top of the planet and went there with Peck. As they were walking, Martha fell into a swamp and started to sink. Peck saved her by jumping into the water and hoisting her to land. Peck then started to sink into the swamp, causing his breathing mask to break, and, despite being a fish-like creature, he drowned.
