Samuel Elkins fought for Virginia in the American Civil War. He was killed by Lucius Casler, a traitor who then led several other deserters to attack Samuel's home. The Fifth Doctor and Turlough were with Samuel when he died, and when their attempts to protect his wife Charlotte from Casler failed, the Doctor went back to a point in the battle when Samuel was still alive and brought him to help his wife defend their home. The Doctor allowed Samuel and Charlotte to spend Christmas together before bringing Samuel back to the battle. (PROSE: Comforts of Home)
