1553 was notable in English history for the nine-day reign of Lady Jane Grey. Rani Chandra met her on 19 July on her ninth and final day in power. Matilda attempted to assassinate Jane, but Rani averted the murder. Nevertheless, Mary I wrested power from Jane the next day, returning the country to official Catholicism.
