Bloomers were female clothes. In the 1920s, they were considered unusual by some men, but were more practical for physical activity such as climbing or crawling.
When Colonel Freeman Lifford asked Daphne Garsington to crawl into the tomb of a Surene king, she changed into bloomers, causing his slight irritation. (AUDIO: The Boundless Sea)
