The Doge of Venice was the leader and chief magistrate of the city of Venice. He headed the Council of Three, which headed the Council of Ten, which headed the Great Council. Ironically, he was also the most powerless person in the city. He was chosen completely at random, and was always in his seventies, so he did not have time to accrue any actual power.
