A magnetic hobble-field, also known by the shorter term magno-grab, was, according to the Eleventh Doctor, "outlawed in most galaxies" and something that could "disable whole vessels".  It was used by Van Baalen Bros. to haul the TARDIS into the salvage merchants' storage bay.  Ordinarily, the TARDIS was immune to the magno-grab, because it had shield oscillators. However, the Doctor had put the TARDIS into basic mode, dropping those shields.  Consequently, the magno-grab worked, and the TARDIS was brought into the company's ship. But the technology worked too well.  It destroyed the TARDIS' engines and set the Ship on an irrevocable path towards explosion which was only averted when the Doctor passed the magno-grab remote to an earlier version of himself through a crack in time and thereby allowed himself to turn off the magno-grab beam when it was first emanated.  Thus, the timeline in which the magno-grab trapped the TARDIS was wholly averted. A magnetic hobble-field was the radiation generated by a magno-grab. Such a field once ensnared the Doctor's TARDIS and nearly caused the ship's destruction. It was activated, and later de-activated, through the use of a magno-grab remote. According to the Eleventh Doctor, such radiation could normally be countered by shield oscillators, but his were disengaged at the time the field was generated, as he had put the TARDIS on basic mode.
