Spider was a young boy living on the streets of nineteenth century London.

During the Frost Fair of 1814, Sutcliffe's men payed Spider and his friends to lure people onto the frozen river Thames to be fed to the creature they had trapped under the ice, though the children themselves were unaware of Sutcliffe's true goal.

Spider and his friends would also use the frost fair to con people for money or food. During one such con, his friend Kitty distracted the Twelfth Doctor and Bill Potts by claiming her dog was missing. Spider then crept up from behind and tried to snatch the Doctor's sonic screwdriver, but the alien caught his arm, only for Kitty to kick him in the leg, allowing the two to run and hide. Spider was puzzled at to what the screwdriver actually did, but Kity assured him it was valuable. The pair soon fled towards their home, but the Doctor and Bill caught up. However, Spider was entranced by the green lights beneath the ice, which proceeded to absorb him below the ice, though not before the Doctor retrieved his sonic.

That night, Bill found Spider's hat when investigating the Thames, confirming he had been fed to the creature. (TV: Thin Ice)
