Charles Rugglesthorpe was an aristocrat. When his father Sir Henry failed to win a game of snakes and ladders against the Celestial Toymaker, he and his family and their servants were turned into the red pieces of his living chess board. Charles and his sister Elisabeth Jane were turned into the pawns. They were later used when the Toymaker played against the Fifth Doctor. (PROSE: Divided Loyalties)
