A humbug was a mint sweet carried by the Eighth (PROSE: Coldheart) and Fourth Doctors. The Fourth Doctor once offered one to Gatherer Hade after their meeting adjourned. (TV: The Sun Makers)
Behind the scenes
Despite the Doctor calling it a humbug, the sweet taken by Hade was in fact a jelly baby. This incident is similar to one in Image of the Fendahl where the Doctor offers a jelly baby that is in fact a liquorice allsort.
