Why Henry Smith?
Actually, the situation is somewhat worse. I was not able to find RW sources that would call Major Henry Smith "Chief Inspector", the rank used in the story. There is Chief Superintendent here, Acting Commissioner here, Sir Henry Smith here, Lieutenant Sir Henry Smith, the Assisstant Commissioner [1]. But never "Chief Inspector". There are already two Smiths involved in the investigation. And one of them, Chief Inspector Smith does not exactly match his RW counterpart Acting Commissioner, Sir Henry Smith. Thus, the rename is indeed necessary. Amorkuz ☎ 21:43, November 11, 2017 (UTC)
