Meriol was the king's chamberlain. He wanted to burn Bernice Summerfield, and thought they were all doomed. Benny didn't like him. He advised his king not to meet Benny whilst his subjects were falling to a plague. He wanted to stop Benny from becoming queen by saying that his choice had to be ratified by parliament.
