Meriol was the king's chamberlain. He wanted to burn Bernice Summerfield, and thought they were all doomed. Benny didn't like him. He advised his king not to meet Benny whilst his subjects were falling to a plague. He wanted to stop Benny from becoming queen by saying that his choice had to be ratified by parliament. He thought that the ship that caused the plague had weapons, which they did. He used the weapons to destroy a rival tribe. (AUDIO: The Winning Side)
