Terra Incognita was a never-completed Bernice Summerfield novel by Ben Aaronovitch. It would have featured Benny before she met the Doctor. Although it was never officially cancelled, it was never published either.

Publisher's summary

One day she will bring down empires and decide the fate of the universe. One day she will be feared by the creatures of evil and revered wherever people have had just a little bit too much to drink.

But all that is yet to come…

Right now, Bernice Summerfield is 22 and living in London with a bloke called Darren. She spends her days at the archaeological equivalent of shelf stacking and her free time trying to figure out a city entirely composed of ethnic minorities. Benny tells herself that she's just hanging on until she can put that all important Earth dig on her Curriculum Vitae.

When a hole opens, literally, in front of her eyes, Benny has a chance to explore more than the role of long chain polymers in late-twenty-second-century building construction. With a couple of friends she makes a descent into the hidden strata that lies beneath modern London. There she will make a discovery that could just rewrite modern history.

That's if modern history doesn't rewrite her first.
