The Leisure Hive was a leisure resort built by the Argolins on their home planet of Argolis. They hoped to protect themselves from the radioactive atmosphere outside, caused by their war with the Foamasi.
Besides being a resort compound, it also had an underlying mission to promote cross-cultural understanding and scientific awareness. In the last few years before the Fourth Doctor arrived, the Hive was spiralling into bankruptcy and suffering from a negative cash flow, with bookings down substantially for the next year.
