Gordon James Lethbridge-Stewart, also known as James Gore or the General, was a human major and later general. James was born in 1926 on Inferno Earth. (PROSE: Mind of Stone)
On the Inferno Earth it was young Alistair who died in 1938, after accidentally falling down Golitha Falls. In that reality James never met Maha, and went on to become a major in the Coldstream Guards. In 1959 he met a man who he came to learn was his dead brother from a parallel future Earth, Colonel Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. James travelled to a middle-reality in the 1940s with the colonel and there met another version of his brother, Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart. He was instrumental in saving Alastair, transporting him to the Inferno Earth where he met their father Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, Director of External Security. (PROSE: The Schizoid Earth) James was greatly disturbed to see how his father raised Alastair to be the perfect fascist and last saw his 'brother' running a labour camp. (PROSE: Ashes of the Inferno)
At some point around 1969, James crossed realities, arriving on Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart's Earth around 1959. (PROSE: Ashes of the Inferno) James took the name James Gore (using the surname of his maternal grandmother) and, known as General Gore or simply the General, became the head of the Vault. (PROSE: Mind of Stone)
In October of 1969, James hired a man named Simon (his son) to gain the trust of Owain Vine, whom he had learned to be his reincarnation. (PROSE: Times Squared)
In November of 1969, James attempted to kidnap Owain in Santorini. (PROSE: Blood of Atlantis, Mind of Stone)
On 24 December of 1969, James learned of Leslie Johnston's attempt on Alistair's life and killed him. (PROSE: Mind of Stone)
At some point, James and Alistair met. When the general was finally pushed out of the Vault by C19, Alistair sent him a reproduction of a photo of himself and this universe's James as children; otherwise, the two had little contact and Alistair refused to let James meet his 'niece' Kate. (PROSE: Ashes of the Inferno)
In 1974, James Gore was living in an old age care home for retired officials from the shadier arms of government. While events occurred at the Inferno Project, James was haunted by memories and images of the Inferno Earth. Getting a vision of Brigade Leader Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart, James contacted Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, who informed him of Inferno Earth's fiery end and agreed to take him to the now-closed Inferno Project. While there, James saw a vision of Brigade Leader Lethbridge Stewart; when Section Leader Liz Shaw shot the Brigade Leader, the bullet also hit James. James died in Alistair's arms. (PROSE: Ashes of the Inferno, TV: Inferno)
