John Lawrence was artist Ron Turner's agent. After Turner's retirement in 1984, Lawrence and colleague Philip Harbottle brought him back to professional work with new projects which Harbottle wrote and Lawrence edited.

Following Turner's commission to do the cover art for the graphic novel reprint of The Dalek Chronicles, Lawrence recognised the renewed interest that the artist and fans would have in a continuation. Lawrence submitted a new page Turner had made during a lull in work to Gary Gillatt, the editor of Doctor Who Magazine. He commissioned the new comic, Return of the Elders, which John Lawrence himself wrote.

A subsequent Dalek Chronicles which Lawrence also wrote, Deadline to Doomsday, was left unfinished at the time of Ron Turner's death. The two unlettered pages were published with an article Lawrence wrote for issue 276 of Doctor Who Magazine about Ron Turner's career.
