Castrovalvans are a civilised society that lived in Castrovalva, a walled city also known as the Dwellings of Simplicity. According th their history books, Castrovalva originated as an alliance of warring hunters that gradually evolved into an ideal society.

This history still resonated as some Castrovalvans liked to don colourful, furry hunting outfits complete with plumed oval helmets and hunt in the wilderness to keep fit long after they adopted their peaceful way of life.

Although some individuals had were troubled, the majority, led by the Portreeve (a kind of magistrate), led a carefree life until the arrival of the newly regenerated Doctor, who was able to prove that their existence was far more fractured and illusory than many suspected. (DW: Castrovalva)
