The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz was a film adapted from the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum. (AUDIO: A Thousand Tiny Wings)

The story involved a protagonist named Dorothy, (AUDIO: The Settling) She and her house were taken from Kansas to the Land of Oz by a tornado. (PROSE: Normality, Dead Romance) The house landed on a witch on its arrival, prompting celebration. (PROSE: Mad Dogs and Englishmen) Other scenes involved a Cowardly Lion, (PROSE: Who Discovered America?) and a Scarecrow who was attacked by flying monkeys in the course of the narrative. (PROSE: Grimm Reality)

In 1002, Susan Foreman said to Barbara Wright that Eric the Red, who was afraid he and his longship would go over the edge of the world, reminded her of the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz. The two then burst into the song-and-dance routine from the film. (PROSE: Who Discovered America?)

Ace was named after the main character, Dorothy, because her mother Audrey was a fan of The Wizard of Oz. The Seventh Doctor was also a fan. (AUDIO: The Settling) Audrey's mother Kathleen loved the film as well, as it took her away from all her miseries. (PROSE: Love and War)

Fitz Kreiner had seen The Wizard of Oz when he was a kid and it had terrified him, especially the scene in which the flying monkeys attacked the Scarecrow. (PROSE: Grimm Reality) A young Ruby Duvall had similar experiences the day her father got hit and paralysed by Michael Brack's motorbike. (PROSE: Iceberg)

When the TARDIS appeared to kill Alid Jag by materialising on top of him and crushing him, the Eighth Doctor compared it to Dorothy's house killing the witch in The Wizard of Oz, except that no one seemed pleased at all by the occurrence. (PROSE: Mad Dogs and Englishmen)

Christine Summerfield referenced this film by describing the difference between her bottle universe and the real one as the difference between monochrome Kansas and technicolor Oz. (PROSE: Dead Romance)

The Eighth Doctor, annoyed with Calamee Fischer asking him where he was from, said he was from, among other places, the Land of Oz. (PROSE: Halflife)

Upon encountering the eye of the storm, the Eleventh Doctor contemplated whether this was what Dorothy had felt like. He noted that he should ask her the next time he saw her. (GAME: The Eternity Clock)

Jesus Delporto thought the inside of the Bridge between Belial and Moloch looked like "something out of the Wizard of Oz". (PROSE: Lucifer Rising)

Clara Oswald couldn't understand where the phrase "safe as houses" came from when houses could, among other things, be taken to Oz by tornadoes. (PROSE: Normality)

A phrase from the film — "I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" — was quoted many times by the Doctor's companions and friends. (PROSE: Matrix, Vanderdeken's Children, Relative Dementias, Falls the Shadow, Return of the Living Dad, The Face of the Enemy, Autumn Mist, The Mother Road, AUDIO: A Death in the Family)
