Matthew Sweet is principally a British broadcaster and television critic. He has contributed to newspapers like The Independent and various arms of the British Broadcasting Corporation. As he holds a doctorate in 19th century sensation fiction, his opinion on that genre, and related ones, became valued by various British media outlets in the 21st century.

He is also the author of various non-televised DWU stories, including: Year of the Pig, The Lampblack Wars, The Earwig Archipelago, The Magic Mousetrap, Voyage to the New World, Maurice and The Diet of Worms, in which he also appeared as the Examiner.

This combination of specific experience with Doctor Who and a broad background in on-air literary criticism attracted the attention of several producers in the 2010s. He presented a radio programme on the history of the Doctor Who theme during the interval of the Doctor Who at the Proms (2010) concert on BBC Radio 3. He was asked to present several documentaries for the so-called "classic" range of Doctor Who DVDs — including Riverside Story, One Hit Wonder, and All's Wells That Ends Wells — as well as the very well-received 50th anniversary documentary, Me, You, and Doctor Who the BBC's The Culture Show. In the same year, along with Nicholas Briggs, he was one of the on stage interviewers for the Doctor Who 50th Celebration Convention at the Excel Centre over the 50th Anniversary weekend.

He also contributed to the charity reference book Behind the Sofa: Celebrity Memories of Doctor Who.
