The captain of the Monitor was (with the rest of his crew) sent into a deep sleep by the Carpanthans so that they could relay false information from the ship. The Third Doctor and the Brigadier found and woke him up at which he panickedly told them that they had been attacked by fishermen from beneath the waves.
