The New Regency Theatre was a London theatre, active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

History

Henry Gordon Jago acquired the New Regency Theatre in the 1890s (AUDIO: The Theatre of Dreams), having sold the Palace Theatre as a result of the scandal following the Weng-Chiang incident in 1889 (PROSE: The Shadow of Weng-Chiang).

The theatre was equipped with electricity. (AUDIO: Swan Song)

In the 1890s, the theatre was refurbished and renovated. (AUDIO: Higson & Quick)

There was a Robin Hood pantomime performed at the theatre. (AUDIO: Swan Song)

Jago made phonograph recordings of certain performances at the theatre. (AUDIO: Mind Games, The Screaming Skull)

Hamlet was performed at the theatre on numerous occasions. Sarah Bernhardt starred in one such production. (AUDIO: Swan Song)

Jago owned the theatre until his death. Sometime later, the ballet Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was first performed at the New Regency Theatre. It was a huge success, selling out the theatre for months. (AUDIO: Swan Song)

At 8:47 p.m. on 12 October 1940, the theatre was destroyed in the Blitz during World War II, as was the hotel next to it. (AUDIO: Swan Song, Chronoclasm) Another building was eventually constructed on the site. (AUDIO: Swan Song)

In 2011, the spirit of the New Regency Theatre possessed Alice. (AUDIO: Swan Song)

Théâtre de Fantasie

About a month after he was first given the theatre, Jago was trapped in a dreamlike reality by the Théâtre de Fantasie. In this reality, Queen Victoria attended a play at the theatre, fulfilling Jago's dream. (AUDIO: The Theatre of Dreams)
