Mariama was the son of Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart and Mariatu. He was born in Sierra Leone, and as a boy returned to his mother's village with her a year after the country gained independence. The fair-skinned, green-eyed boy grew up and became a soldier. He had a son, who also became a soldier, and a daughter, Kadiatu Lethbridge-Stewart, who became a historian. (PROSE: Transit)
On Saturday 7 January 2012, Mariama atteneded the funeral of his father in Bledoe. (PROSE: Lucy Wilson and the Bledoe Cadets)
