: Not necessarily conclusive evidence if we're being very, very strict about going strictly by what is explicitly said in stories… but The Dalek Handbook from 2011 explicitly identifies Kaalann as the name of the classic Dalek City, so I think that between that and the Doctor's description of the video game Kaalann as the Daleks' capital city which he last saw in ruins, it's fairly clear what the authorial intent was. --Scrooge MacDuck ☎ 14:55, July 23, 2019 (UTC) | : Not necessarily conclusive evidence if we're being very, very strict about going strictly by what is explicitly said in stories… but The Dalek Handbook from 2011 explicitly identifies Kaalann as the name of the classic Dalek City, so I think that between that and the Doctor's description of the video game Kaalann as the Daleks' capital city which he last saw in ruins, it's fairly clear what the authorial intent was. --Scrooge MacDuck ☎ 14:55, July 23, 2019 (UTC)
::The Dalek Handbook is not a valid source for in-universe articles. :::No, of course it isn't, hence why I acknowledged that it was "not necessarily conclusive evidence" before anything else. But while not a valid source for Tardis's version of an in-universe Who encyclopedia, I thought it useful to pull it in as proof that in terms of authorial intent, the creators of the video game Kaalann almost certainly intended it to be the City. If this was the sole evidence, it would, as non-narrative info, not pass Tardis's standards of what it accepts on in-universe pages.
:::But from where I'm standing, we're being as speculative in positing two separate Dalek capital cities as we would be in conflating Kaalann with the classic Dalek City, and reference material from around the time of production shows that our speculation is clearly not what the writers of the story in question had in mind. Which really ought to colour our choice of which of the two readings we take.
:::Honestly, the case doesn't seem to me to be too different from when the TV series revealed the name of Gallifrey. No Wiki was around then, of course, but surely no viewer back then defaulted to the assumption that this was a new "home planet of the Time Lords", separate from the unnamed one seen previously in War Games and Three Doctors. Why should we treat a story revealing the name of "the capital city of the Daleks" any differently, especially when we've got off-screen confirmation that yes, the BBC did mean for us to read it as the name of the old Dalek City?--Scrooge MacDuck ☎ 15:56, July 23, 2019 (UTC) |
