Jessica Hynes appeared in the Doctor Who episodes Human Nature/The Family of Blood as Joan Redfern, and The End of Time as Verity Newman. Previously, she had also voiced Glory Bee in the Doctor Who audio drama Invaders from Mars.
As a teenager Hynes was a member of the National Youth Theatre company, and made her screen début in 1993 playing the First Midwife in Peter Greenaway's The Baby of Mâcon. She later became well known for her appearances in the sit-com The Royle Family. Hynes co-created and starred in Spaced alongside Simon Pegg, who was also in Invaders from Mars. In 2011 she appeared in The Hour, in which Burn Gorman played her husband.
Her film credits include Shaun of the Dead and voice-over work for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
