Adelaide Brooke's father hid Adelaide in the attic during the Dalek invasion of Earth in 2009 and went out to search for his wife. Neither of them ever came back and their bodies were never found. It was possible they were either killed by the Daleks or they died on the Crucible during the Reality Bomb test.

Adelaide reflected on this to the Tenth Doctor at Bowie Base One in 2059. (TV: The Waters of Mars)
