A Black Dalek, or the Schwarzer Dalek in German as opted by SS Hauptsturmführer Kurt Schalk, was the head of a Dalek force on the planet Azimuth.
Biography
Its base of operations was an old Dalek laboratory established during a previous invasion of the planet; 20 years after the Seventh Doctor and Ace repelled the invasion, the lab was never cleared out and the Daleks continued to use it in secret.
After retrieving Schalk, the Nazi inventor was brought to the lab where the Black Dalek and Falkus began interrogating him in order to learn how to construct his persuasion machine. Schalk's resistance and mental conditioning caused the Black Dalek to become impatient, and it threatened to exterminate the captive unless he cooperate.
Falkus interrupted the Black Dalek and warned that killing Schalk would go against the wishes of the Supreme Dalek. The Black Dalek claimed it had received no such notification. Falkus, secretly the Supreme Dalek himself, overrode the Black Dalek's command and turned the other Daleks against it. They destroyed the Black Dalek as it tried to protest that it was the superior Dalek.
Falkus then released Schalk and allowed him to become Führer of the Daleks until his usefulness had expired. (AUDIO: Daleks Among Us)
Behind the scenes
- The black and silver colour scheme matches that of the Supreme Dalek in Remembrance of the Daleks, complete with red luminosity dischargers.
- Despite featuring prominently on the front cover of Daleks Among Us, the Black Dalek only plays a minor role in the story; it is destroyed before the end of part one and never encounters the Doctor, Elizabeth Klein or Will Arrowsmith. This may have been in order to avoid spoilers.
- It is established that this Black Dalek is not the Supreme Dalek itself, thereby distinguishing between the rank and the title.
