Commander Smith was the captain of a spacecraft. He received the distress signal from the crashed UK-201 on Dido and proceeded there to rescue Vicki Pallister and Bennett. When the Doctor's TARDIS' arrival was detected, Vicki thought this meant that the rescue ship had already landed, but the captain confirmed that they were still three days away. After the TARDIS left Dido, the captain tried to contact them again, but the Dido people wrecked the communications system. (TV: The Rescue)
Behind the scenes
The individual's rank was not given on-screen, only in the credits. In the novelisation, his rank and name is Commander Smith, and the name of his ship is the Seeker.
