The Creation of the Cybermen was the first short story in DWPM 2, devoted to the Cybermen. It was credited as being "adapted" from Gerry Davis's Doctor Who and the Tomb of the Cybermen (presumably by writer Marcus Hearn). More precisely, the text was taken from the prologue to Davis's novel, but removed references to the specific storyline of Tomb of the Cybermen.
The most salient rewrite was that the setting was changed from Telos to Mondas, in an effort to maintain continuity with The Tenth Planet in a way which neither Davis nor the original Tomb of the Cybermen TV story had cared to do. Many years later, the televised story The Doctor Falls would reinstate the idea that Cybermen had been created on Telos independently from those on Mondas, retrospectively rendering The Creation of the Cybermen's retcon arguably unnecessary.
Summary
On the planet Mondas, a race of men seek immortality — but the solution they devise leaves them without a sense of purpose. What must they do?

- Cybermen have no hearts.
Notes
- Despite the story providing the origin of the Mondasian Cybermen, a colourised still of a Telosian Cyberman from The Tomb of the Cybermen was used as an illustration.
Continuity
- The Cybermen arose on Mondas. (TV: The Tenth Planet)
