Erfurt was the base of Ermawerke, a German weapons manufacture which made the MP 38 submachine gun beginning in 1937. In that year, some of their guns were smuggled to China to aid Hsien-Ko and the Tong of the Black Scorpion. However, it was not until 1938, that the MP 38 were issued to the Schutzstaffel.
