Jenkins was a pupil at Farringham School for Boys in 1913. He had a slight cold which had him visit the Matron, Joan Redfern, but she rather suspected that he was missing his mother more than anything else. A letter from his mother arrived that very morning, leaving him "a lot more chipper." (TV: Human Nature) He later participated in the defence of the school. (TV: The Family of Blood)
