Michael was a scientist who was asked by General Sharp to research Stahlman's ooze, being told that the aim was to find a means of protecting people from it should other samples of the ooze be discovered. He agreed to undertake the project.
He coined the name "Primord" for those infected by the ooze and eventually sought out Dr Liz Shaw to assist him. The two spent an extensive amount of time in the laboratory and entered into a romantic relationship, later becoming engaged. However, a tiny tear in Michael's glove meant that he became a Primord. Liz kept him a secret and cared for him but she too became infected, although she kept her human form thanks to a serum.
