Children of Gallifrey were taken from their families at the age of eight, to enter the Academy.
The Time Lord Academy was a place where most young Time Lords attended to further their educations. Children began instruction there at the age of 8. Part of the initiation into the academy involved looking into the Untempered Schism. (DW: The Sound of Drums) Time Lords spend "centuries" at the Academy. (DWM: Mortal Beloved) Although we do not know The Doctor's, The Master's, or The Rani's real names, while at the Academy they referred to themselves as Ushas (The Rani), Theta Sigma (The Doctor), and Koschei (The Master).

There were several chapters within the Time Lord Academy. These included:
- Arcalian Chapter
- Cerulean Chapter
- Dromeian Chapter
- Patrex Chapter
- Prydonian Chapter
- Scendles Chapter
At the induction ceremony for the Academy all Time Lords say:
- "I swear to protect the ancient Law of Gallifrey with all my might and brain. I will to the end of my days with justice and with honour temper my actions and my thoughts." (DW: Shada)
