Jamie was a young boy who was born in 1937. He had been wearing his gas mask during an air raid in the London Blitz.

Biography

In January 1941, Jamie was killed and had a massive head trauma on the left side, partial collapse of his chest cavity on the right and a gash on the back of his right hand. He was reanimated by the Chula nanogenes that had leaked out of a crashed medical transport ship. His only thought was to be reunited with his mother, and he wandered the streets of London, a gas mask forever merged to his face, asking everyone, "Are you my mummy?" Because the nanogenes were unaware of what a human looked like, they began transforming all humans with whom they came into contact into gas mask zombies.

In the end, the nanogenes were able to use DNA from both Jamie and his mother, Nancy, and restored him to normal. (TV: The Doctor Dances)

More than 60 years later in 2009, the Tenth Doctor jokingly quoted Jamie's repeated question, "Are you my mummy?" when forced to don a gas mask during a Sontaran attack. (TV: The Poison Sky)

Whilst aboard the Orient Express, the Twelfth Doctor briefly asked the Foretold the same question in an attempt to bring humour to his possible last few seconds of life. (TV: Mummy on the Orient Express)

Personality

As the Empty Child, Jamie's sole goal was to reunite with his mother. He searched for her obsessively through the streets of London. Once the nanogenes recognised Nancy as his mother, he was restored to normal and was happily reunited with his parent. (TV: The Doctor Dances)

Abilities

After having been resurrected by Chula nanogenes, Jamie was equipped with the standard abilities of Chula warriors.

He most frequently used Om-Com, a communication system that allowed the user to speak through anything with a speaker grill. Jamie could talk through phones, radios and even typewriters.

Anyone Jamie touched would become infected by the nanogenes and become a "gas mask zombie". He could exert full telepathic control over all of them and coordinate their actions in the manner of a hive mind. Each infected person was essentially an extension of Jamie himself.

He also displayed telekinesis when he caused a door to slam shut simply by pointing at it.

Jamie possessed superhuman strength, especially for his small size. He could easily punch his way through a thick wall with little to no effort.

After he was restored to normal, he lost all of these abilities. (TV: The Doctor Dances)

Behind the scenes

Jamie afflicted by the Empty Child "plague" is used as one of "Gas Mask Zombie" enemies in the Doctor Who: Legacy mobile game.
