Jenny Chaplin was a rebel during the Daleks' occupation of Earth in the 22nd century.
Biography
Early life
Jenny Chaplin was the sister of Victor Chaplin and sister-in-law of Laura. (AUDIO: After the Daleks) When the Daleks invaded Earth in 2157, (PROSE: Lucifer Rising) she was away from her brother, who was in France. (AUDIO: After the Daleks)
Dalek occupation
Jenny spent most of her life fighting the Daleks. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth) She was in charge of the job rota in the resistance group's headquarters and, in order to deal with her life, she seemed to become callous and uncaring. (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth) In 2166, (PROSE: Lucifer Rising) she lost Victor to the robotisation process.
Jenny participated in the attack on the Daleks' spacecraft. Along with Dortmun and Barbara Wright, she returned to the hideout after the attack went wrong. They escaped across London to the Civic Transport Museum, another hideout, where Dortmun was killed.
Jenny and Barbara set off again and found a house belonging to two women, a mother and daughter, who traded with the Daleks and, in exchange for more food, betrayed the pair to the invaders. Jenny and Barbara were stuck aboard the craft for some time until Ian Chesterton and the First Doctor released them. After the Daleks' defeat, Jenny opted to stay in London and help rebuild the city. (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth)
Aftermath
After the victory, Jenny rounded up the Robomen to help them and found Victor. She helped find a strange creature that was running in the tunnels below London and was captured by Marcus Bray in his campaign against Susan Foreman. When they learnt the truth of Bray's part in the invasion, she advocated for him to be tried rather than killed on the spot. After Victor was returned to her, she used the same techniques to restore other Robomen. (AUDIO: After the Daleks)
Personality
Jenny seemed gruff and callous as a result of spending her life fighting the Daleks, but Dortmun told Barbara that she was not really so. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth) She did not believe in wasting time nor in being sentimental and did not think that there was anything heroic about sacrificing one's life, considering Dortmun's sacrifice to be romantic and wasteful. (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth)
Appearance
According to one account, Jenny was a small, dark girl. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth) Another depicted her with fair hair. (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth)
Behind the scenes
- It was initially planned that Jenny would replace Susan Foreman as a companion. However, the idea was abandoned and Vicki Pallister was used instead.
- Ann Davies originated the role in The Dalek Invasion of Earth, with her daughter Lucy Briers recreating the role in After the Daleks.
- Jenny's surname, Chaplin, was created for After the Daleks and approved by Terry Nation's estate. (BFX: After the Daleks)
