The Doctor uses a visual recognition system in order to determine the species of the monster Vincent van Gogh could see. The Doctor had a recognition system which he received from his godmother. Initially, the Doctor thought the system was pointless and a waste of space, until he needed to use it.

The recognition system was able to be strapped to the user and was able to identify any species of alien. It was even able to identify and show a Krafayis, a species which is usually invisible. When it finds a match, the system pings and gives the user information on the species, including name, planet of origin, and other information about it. Initially, when trying to identify the Krafayis using a drawing, the system had trouble, at first identifying it as a parrot and then as a polar bear.
Using a direct image or a picture, the system was capable of identifying a species. Though it was capable of using drawings, it would be less accurate. It would give the species' name, planet of origin and other important information. It could connect to the TARDIS to print out the information, or be carried by the user to give information on a mirror screen. It also had the ability to recognise the Doctor, even if he had regenerated, as it printed pictures of the First Doctor and Second Doctor. If the identification was incorrect, it would respond to oral instructions to reassess. It had the ability to show a creature even if it was invisible. (TV: Vincent and the Doctor)

It was also able to identify certain individuals of certain species, such as the Doctor. When it identified the Doctor, it displayed images of his first and second incarnations, and listed his planet as Gallifrey, though it did not mention the fact he was a Time Lord. (DW: Vincent and the Doctor)

"Species matcher" is a title based upon conjecture.

The species matcher (TV: Vincent and the Doctor)

The species matcher was a device capable of identifying the species of an individual by their image. The Doctor got one as a gift from his godmother. Its mirror was smashed when the Eleventh Doctor was looking for a Krafayis. (TV: Vincent and the Doctor)

Abilities[[edit] | [edit source]]
