The Wizard of Oz was a film adapted from the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum. (AUDIO: A Thousand Tiny Wings) The film premiered in Hollywood at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on 15 August 1939. (PROSE: The Wonderful Doctor of Oz)

(PROSE: Mad Dogs and Englishmen) Other scenes involved a Cowardly Lion, (PROSE: Who Discovered America?) and a Scarecrow who was attacked by flying monkeys in the course of the narrative. (PROSE: Grimm Reality) Yasmin Khan remembered being scared by bits of it, including a scene in which Dorothy was attacked by a tree. She also remembered flying monkeys and the ruby shoes. When the TARDIS appeared to kill Alid Jag by materialising on top of him and crushing him, the Eighth Doctor compared it to Dorothy's house killing the witch in The Wizard of Oz, except that no one seemed pleased at all by the occurrence. (PROSE: Mad Dogs and Englishmen)

Christine Summerfield referenced this film by describing the difference between her bottle universe and the real one as the difference between monochrome Kansas and technicolor Oz. (PROSE: Dead Romance)

The Eighth Doctor, annoyed with Calamee Fischer asking him where he was from, said he was from, among other places, the Land of Oz. (PROSE: Halflife)

A phrase from the film — "I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" — was quoted many times by the Doctor's companions and friends. When revealing to the Doctor, Yasmin Khan, Graham O'Brien and Ryan Sinclair his true identity by showing them, through the window of an aeroplane, his own house flying through the air, the Spy Master acknowledged that it was "very Wicked Witch of the West". (TV: Spyfall)

Behind the scenes

• The crossover video game LEGO Dimensions, which is not considered a valid source on this wiki, sees the main characters travel both to a world based on the 1939 film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, and to the Doctor Who Universe. The Wizard of Oz antagonist, the Wicked Witch of the West, is recruited by the game's main antagonist and makes a few other minor appearances later in the game. In another installment of the LEGO franchise, The Lego Batman Movie, versions of both the Wicked Witch and the Daleks were among the interdimensional villains recruited by the Joker to wreak havoc on Gotham City.
• DWA 47 humourously presented an image of a Doctor Who-themed The Wizard of Oz featuring Donna Noble as Dorothy, K9 as Toto, an animated scarecrow as the Scarecrow, the Catkind Thomas Kincade Brannigan as the Cowardly Lion, and a Cyberman as the Tin Man.
