Frank Openshaw was the husband of Sandra Openshaw, and the archaeologist in charge of excavations at the Crediton Vale dig site. After the Tenth Doctor discovered an inactive Dalek at the site he removed its gunstick and asked Frank to take it far away. Frank intended to take the gun to his home in Twyford, but was intercepted on the train by the newly-reborn Dalek. The Dalek persuaded Frank to return its gunstick, and then used it to exterminate him.

After the Dalek was defeated, the Tenth Doctor visited Durham University in 1970, where Frank and Sandra were studying at the time, and slightly altered the past by allowing them to meet earlier in life. This was a tribute to his brief but loyal friend. (PROSE: I Am a Dalek)
