Val worked in Sanderson & Grainger, a shop in Colchester where people were being converted into Cybermen. When the Eleventh Doctor worked there in 2011, she, like the rest of the employees, became quite fond of him. She gossiped with the Doctor and thought he and Craig Owens were a couple. She viewed them as good "daddies" to Craig's son, Alfie Owens. She considered the Doctor's term "companion" to be rather outdated, although she interpreted it as having a more romantic component. She also told the Doctor about the "silver rat thing", which she wanted to get for her nephew, only to find that it was not a stockroom item. (TV: Closing Time)
