He was, however, best known for his starring acting role as Wallace "Wally" Cleaver, the title character's older brother, on the long-running American situation comedy, Leave It to Beaver (1957-1963). He reprised this role in a reunion special and a sequel series from 1983 to 1989.

Dow was also the visual effects supervisor for Babylon 5, and special effects producer for the sci-fi comedy The Adventures of Captain Zoom in Outer Space. A former junior Olympics diving champion, he was married twice and was the father of one child.
