David Gilligan was a burglar who tried to rob the house of a family at Christmas in 1987. He was interrupted by the family and the Eighth Doctor. When David was discovered, the Doctor tricked the family into believing David was his friend "Charlie". Impressed by the Doctor's enigmatic behaviour, David promised the Doctor that he would return everything that he had taken and had dinner with the family he had intended to rob, along with the Doctor.
